  • 'Now it's curtains for bacteria' says SMI

Following five years of research a huge hygiene breakthrough has been achieved by Seymour Manufacturing International (SMI).  Bio-Gard enriched with SteriTouch is a plastic strip curtain that kills 99.99% of illness causing pathogenic bacteria including MRSA, E-Coli and Salmonella. Significantly the curtain does not lose efficacy over time and the bacteria killing property is active throughout the matrix of the material. This means it works even if the curtain is cut or damaged.

SMI's Cold Stop door curtains now on Tesco's model standard

Following the successful application of Seymour Manufacturing’s Cold Stop insulated strip curtains to chill and freezer store doors in 600 Super and Extra format premises, Tesco has included Cold Stop on its Model Standard for all new store openings.  This decision to accept Cold Stop will provide a continuing remarkable reduction in energy consumption for the retailer. It indicates the success of Tesco’s environmental teams’ efforts to reduce energy consumption throughout its business and substantially lower its carbon footprint.

From Seymour Manufacturing International’s headquarters in Telford, Shropshire, Chairman Brian Seymour commented that this acceptance by Tesco was justification indeed of all the hard work that had been put into development of Cold Stop.  “We have a programme of continuous product development in conjunction with our customers thus ensuring that we, and they keep abreast of technical developments”, he added.

Tempro® Cold Stop is an insulated door curtain for cold rooms and freezers which, due to its thermal efficiency reduces room energy consumption by allowing optimum settings on evaporator equipment to achieve the internal working temperature.  Cold Stop curtains, patented by SMI, provide a revolutionary alternative to plastic strip curtains used in many cold rooms.  The curtain is based on Tempro® which provides insulation properties far greater than standard types, and hence resultant energy reductions.  Floor ice, resulting from condensation dripping from plastic strips and its associated slip hazard is eliminated from freezer entries/exits.

Customer experience and SMI’s validated research has shown that when using these curtains energy savings range from a stunning 18% to 25% in a chiller room to an amazing 30% to 35% in freezers.  Standard 475mm wide curtain panels have a deep, frost-clear window and heights to suit customer requirements.  They are soft and lightweight, easily cleaned, hygienic and flexible, fit well and do not split, thus avoiding the expense of frequent costly replacement. Experience indicates curtain lives 8 to 12 times longer than PVC strip designs. With SMI’s unique ‘cold lock’ system, the curtains fit neatly and effectively to the door head and floor by using an SMI patented header arrangement that is a design and efficiency breakthrough, also contributing to energy savings.
